Just a quick heads-up that in the next day or so, OutdoorsMagic will be moving across to a new, more contemporary platform complete with a completely redesigned forum.

The background, for those who aren't already aware of it, is that the site recently moved to new owners in the shape of Factory Media, a specialist action sports publisher, which feels like a much better home for an outdoors web site.

There's been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to move much of the existing content across to the new platform and it looks great, in a sleeker, more modern way. We're also aiming to up our game in terms of content and photography.

Initially there'll be a continuing focus on product reviews and general outdoor news, but going forward, there's every chance that the scope of the site will broaden to include other content, erm, strands and areas.

Finally, I haven't seen the new forum in its finished form, but it should incorporate all the existing content, but have a new, sleeker, easier to use interface. You'll probably need to sign in again and possibly create a new password, but hopefully once that's done, it'll be relatively glitch free.

    Onwards and upwards!

    Jon

Good news Jon. A new interface is long overdue.

Will there be effective but unobtrusive moderation?

I'm not sure what the moderation arrangements are, but that's what I'd hope for, yes.

I love the caption on the 2nd picture from one of Factory Media's sites.

    Can't fault the accuracy:

    https://outsidetimes.com/gear/hiking...-basics-12908/

They seem to do a lot of '10 reasons to...' '10 best places to..' '5 essentials for...'

Well, if it's not already obvious, there's obviously both a new site and, now, a new forum as well. Bear with us, there are bound to be some teething problems, but I think it'll be worth it.

Not had a proper nose around the Forum yet Jon, but nice to see it's operational again…
… Shame there's no 'Latest Posts' option (that I've noticed, anyway) as that was my usual default way to see what was being posted.

I hear you on the 'Latest Posts' front, but there is a 'new posts' option which will show you what's been posted since you last visited I think, so that should do roughly the same job, if that makes sense. And there are strange things, like the option to rate this thread. Hang on...

There are actually at least two:
There's the 'new posts' thing but also if you click on 'What's New' on the bar on the top left hand side you basically get the same thing in a sort of stream format. Presumably meant to be mobile friendly that.

The activity stream has a definite pagination bug of some sort on my current browser. I think down to oversized avatars.

Rating threads is presumably meant to be related to stuff like rating posts on sundry comment places, but its a tiny bit surprising to see it at a thread level.

Yes, thanks Jon, I've just noticed the 'New Posts' button.
Think I'll need to change my profile pic as it now looks rather too large!

I think the avatar processing needs to be modified to make all avatar pictures the same size; not a job for users to do...

Just tried out some old thread URLs. All returning 'Error 404 PNF'. It would be a great shame if all the old pages and links were broken; "the Internet is broken"...

[edit post] Private message history also missing.

    Trying old skool quote...

    > wibble

Yay! Not goggled up by an over-zealous HTML parser...

Font on posts is okay, but the surrounding font is poorly rendered. This is probably some interaction with the ancient Firefox 17, but other websites render just fine.

Where are my 'special buttons', Jon? (re. the earlier comments).

    Evening Ed…
… me avatar head has now shrunk a little — more in balance with the brain cell count

    Evening Capt'n, sorry post overlapped.

Just got in on new forum, no time to look around but seems more up to date throughout. Had trouble logging in to forum so sent a message and then managed to do it.
Hope it goes well. Have always like OM for my in house fixes of the outside

    What about PMs?

I tried to access my messages and got:
"Inbox contains 0 messages. You have 0 messages stored..."

And what about text formatting? I had to type in my own [ I ] to get italics.

Not looking too bad so far. Hopefully the bugs will be ironed out soon, as in hours or a couple of days, rather than the years or decades it took the old crew.

According to my stats I am aged 11. Should I even be on here. Best change it sharpish lest I be accused of being an internet weirdy.
