Well it's a bit of a faff, but I didn't really have a problem with it.

It no longer works on just one computer. It's now possible to use it on 2, or on a computer plus one of those things that go in a handbag/pocket.

    - But how many discs did you have to re-register? I had loads and ran out of the deadline as I was only re-registering as I used them...so dead software.

More and more products are using this dratted registration nonsense, and too many people accept it without thinking ahead.

The code constructs a fingerprint of your PC using a number of components, e.g. the BIOS Id, the Windows Product-Id, hard disk Id, graphics card Id etc.. Typically it allows some (maybe 1 or 2) of them to change without complaining, but sooner or later it no longer works - you have to get another unlock code from Anquet. I don't know which components Anquet use in their algorithm, but there are only a few available.

Think about it - after changing a couple of components, you buy a bigger hard disk - go grovelling to Anquet for another code. You buy a better graphics card - grovel to Anquet again. Next year you buy a better PC - grovel again, and so it goes on for ever.

And who's to say they'll give you a new code?. If you change your components relatively often, they might decide that you're pulling a fast one and refuse - you are totally at their mercy. This is the main problem with so much commercial software, sooner or later they'll screw you one way or another. Memory Map and Tracklogs don't have any of this (at the moment).

With any luck we'll get some OpenSource mapping software written some time. In fact the leading map formats have already been unravelled and the maps from one product can now be used for the others - there *is* hope!

    Regards

It doesn't have it on the discs I bought a couple of years ago; it's the updated versions that do it - and of course you get the emails telling how great it will be to upgrade....NOT.

We tend to swop components/PCs round at home a lot - 3 on the home network constantly being upgraded/repaired/messed with but only one at a time with Anquet on (mine) so I'm sticking to the old version that came on the discs thank you.

Has anyone played with Landserf? It looks interesting, but I haven't downloaded it yet.

"LandSerf is a freely available Geographical Information System (GIS) for the visualisation and analysis of surfaces"

It can import the STRM 1 arc-second DEM data.

I found this whilst looking at the Terragen Resources page.

I still haven't found out how to make Terragen colour the ground anything other than grey...

I found Terragen whilst looking at the Huygens probe results...

    It's grey cos it's a post-cataclysmic mapping system.
