Wow, finally a whole article on this very real problem but not even a mention of the worst cause - The Selfie Stick. Multiple independent peer reviewed studies have repeatedly shown that projecting the camera further into the atmosphere causes a dramatic increase in pixel absorption, as the photographer's body no longer blocks one side of the device. There is also a theory (known as the Punter effect after it's main proponent Dr. Ima Greyday Punter) that the particles of smugness generally found around selfie stick users are acting as an accelerant to pixel degradation. And all this without even taking into account the dangers of the lack of self awareness and disregard for the well being of oneself and others that is often attributed to serial selfie taking.
Please help by joining a selfie prevention group near you. Notable organisations include the League of Photobombers, the Scottish winter based Spray a Gaper (who focus primarily on using "slasher bombs" of snow to disable pole and helmet mounted GoPros on people side slipping down busy runs that are too hard for them, and families that have never seen snow before posing in the middle of the uplift track) or the more extreme Snap a Stick Society.

No way! I'll be putting some pixels back this weekend using the reverse function on my Eco Digital SLR - even if you don't have one of those, you can improve things by simply deleting images you don't want and liberating the micro-pixels that way.
