Y Garn was my first experience of winter walking. My mate wanted to go up Banana Gulley - I thought that much too steep. Instead went up the North East ridge which I found quite easy with crampons (lots of people were turning back who didn't have them). Overall a cracking walk.

Done banana gully, not as steep as it looks until you hit a cornice at the top tho at that point you can head to the right for an easier top out.

The view east from Y Garn's summit to the Ogwen Valley and Tryfan is quite possibly the finest view in Snowdonia.

I must confess, I've always been a little bit in love with Y Garn - it seems to get a raw deal with the likes of Tryfan and the Glyders distracting from it, but it's an ace little mountain with brilliant view in pretty much every direction. I have good memories of it in everything from proper winter deep freeze conditions through to baking sunshine.

All I can say is my mate found it very steep near the top (possibly the cornice) and was a bit disconcerted by the helicopter rescue taking place from A gulley! See incident 5, 2011:

Y Garn is a great place to get your eye in for spotting Pitts Head Tuff. The silica nodules are a bit of a give away. On Y Garn they're marble sized. Over on Moel Hebog, more like cannon balls.

Great views from the summit and the rock beneath your feet has a pretty amazing story to tell.

Ronal Turnbull gives a lively account of how it was formed.

Did I really label that image as being '‚?¶ towards Y Garn summit' Jon?I doubt it...

‚?¶ The photo was taken looking towards Y Lliwedd in April 2013. Taz and I didn't walk the Glyderau that weekend.

No big deal ‚?? just me being pedantic
