Don't know what you want them for but I find they're too big/stiff to be of much use. A real bugger if you want to fold it in a "different" place too. I just buy sticky backed clear vinyl from WH Smiths and stick it to both sides. Helps if you iron the map first (which also softens the glue which keeps the cover on).

I love these maps, not as stiff as the ones you get in most high street shops.

You can also get them online at www.guidepost.uk.com. (Sorry don't know how to hyperlink)

I have found their service very reliable

Another vote for Aqua3 -- I wouldn't buy anything else any more.

I agree. Only use Aqua3. Well worth the extra over a normal paper map. I would have destroyed a number of those but my Aqua3's are still going.

Aqua 3 seem significantly more flexible than most laminated maps, you can buy them online from the web site. Laminated maps generally are a bit bulky.

An alternative solution is one of the Ortlieb map cases which are totally waterproof, nice and grippy and last forever, or until you lose them / lend them to someone :-(

Aqua3 ones are great and not as bulky as the heavily laminated ones. It's also possible to fold them in "wrong" places. Only slight drawback I have found is that they are just a teeny bit too bulky to fit in the map pocket of my jacket. Still better than the other ones though.

The Ortlieb map cases are great, apart from putting a opaque logo on one side! I always use one to protect any maps I printout from Tracklogs/Anquet last week I inadvertently left it in my walking trousers pocket and in to the washing machine it went... Yep Ortlieb map cases are Whirlpool programme 4 extra rinse proof.

I'll go along with alot of the comments already posted - get yourself some self adhesive plastic on a roll from WH Smith for 3 quid and you can make your own far more user friendly map and just cut out and take the sections you need for a day.

If you use digital map software then you can print on X-Stream water resistant paper.

Laminated maps are too bulky / stiff . expensive!

If you opt for printing on waterproof paper, then make sure that the ink you use is also waterproof.

Dont ask how I know about this problem....

I'm with Jon on the ortlieb map carrier tip. Have you ever managed to fold and unfold a laminated map in anything higher than a force nothing breeze? It's like getting savaged by a ... well, by a laminated map.

Aqua3 is the best of all laminated maps - thinner, more durable, nice matt finish, and even feels good! Failing that - pop your map in one of those bomb-proof Ortlieb mapcases. Once you've tried an Ortlieb, you wonder why other mapcase manufacturers don't just curl up and die! As for the opaque logo mentioned above, with a bit of care you can peel it off because it's rather like an iron-on transfer.

the other map case manufacturers don't curl up and die otherwise we'd have no nominations in the 'alternative nominationations - most useless / cruddy kit' message thread...

Yep, another vote for the indestructible Ortlieb map case here too. Last for ever, though do eventually turn yellow with age but still remain resolutely waterproof.

Sadly though I've managed to lose two in last eighteen months.
