I'm puzzled why this will be more breathable than an Active Shell jacket? Other than a bit less tape sealant surely it will be the same?

Otherwise if windstopper is waterproof why don't they use windstopper in their waterproof shells ?

Or is it something to do with the Hydrostatic Head ?

Its a bit funny isn't it Essentially this jacket doesn't obviously seem to make any sense vs a properly waterproof alternative. (or a proper soft shell.).

Windstopper might quite possibly be a little more breathable than pro/activeshell etc - it doesn't have the PU layer protecting the membrane so might allow a tiny bit of air flow as per Event etc. It probably isn't used in main line waterproofs due to issues with it contaminating with body oils etc and stopping working as a membrane over time.

I think it started as repurposed 1st gen Goretex. Of course they may well have changed the construction by now. Goodness knows.

    Martin,

I've read that comment about being more breathable several times and it would be nice if it was true as there are some nice jackets around made of the stuff.
But I'm very sceptical it would be noticeable outside of a laboratory.

It'll probably be more breathable in the sense that say Event is - rather slightly.

In fact the existence of event/Neoshell jackets at ~the same price/spec as this sort of thing really is what makes them look rather pointless. WIndstopper maybe makes a bit more sense when combined into some panels of a jacket with non membrane stuff.
