Suds Watch - erm, there's quite a lot them, but they're all inside the machine so far along with two soft shell jackets and some ME G2 Mountain Pants...

Well, live from the kitchen, thanks to the wonders of wireless technology, I can tell you that the wash cycle has finished with no erruption of foam, though there was quite a bit of it at one point and we're now in double rinse mode with just 29 minutes to go - thorough these German washing machines....

I hope you appreciate that I'm missing the office Christmas party so I can test soap

Forgive my ignorance, but how is this better than pure soap flakes?

You can go straight to the bubbles without farting around mixing the stuff up to prevent bits of soap flake being welded to your Cascadas

Yeah!!!! The wash cycle is fully finished, the machine's making posh bleeping noises and all three garments appear to be mostly intact. I think... No money found in door seal.

They're drying now, but what I can tell you is that one of the jackets, a Haglöfs er, whatever it's called, a Flexable one, had mud in the tail from mountain bike use the other week and you can still see the marks, which is the problem with pure soap- based cleaners. Hmmm... No obvious soap residue though.

The advantage over soapflakes is convenience and lack of soap-flake residue on the garments. With soap flakes I generally ended up making my own soap solution, which is time I'd rather spend doing something else and it still tends to leave some soap solids behind. If you try and use soap flakes direct in the washing machine, it's a word of residual soap horror.

And that's it.By driving at an average speed of around 200mph, I may get get to London in time for the office do. Then again, both the Snake and Woodhead were closed earlier on, which doesn't really bode well for travelling...

If you get down to London Jon, bet you don't get back very soon.

Thanks for the answer. I've only used the flakes for hand washing my gear - I really must find out what all those buttons on the washing machine do.

Ah, you must have the same posh German washing machine as I do. Very irritating, those bleeping noises!
