I've been wearing a rather smart Smartwool v-neck baselayer to work during the cold snap; makes a massive difference in my somewhat cool office!

Sportswool that isn't it? Thats a poly/merino mix while Smartwool is 'just' a pure merino company. UK distribution not at all good for some reason.

not really tried smartwool in a top, only in socks. I normally stick (ha ha) to 100% synthetic tops. Maybe time for a try

60 about standard for merino tops now. Especially heavier weight ones like these (220g/m2 is verging on light mid layer). Merino wool isn't something they can produce in giant quantities or quickly so its always going to be pricy.

For that matter you can spend nearly that much on some synthetic base layers. And yes it is fractionally scary....

(well you can actually spend rather more from a few people but really.).

Smartwool tops have been around for years - I have 4 and much prefer them to Icebreaker. I think my oldest is 6 or 7 years old now and still hole-free.

Distribution turned poor 3 or 4 years ago when Timberland bought them - they fouled up so badly that even the socks more or less disappeared from the shops. I'm not sure who Timberland sold them on to but it's clear that whoever it is has been making a better job of the distribution for the last year or so...

One of the really nice things about Smartwool baselayers is that the ladies' fit has a good long torso. And actually Icebreaker aren't at all bad with torso length too. With Berghaus I have to buy men's baselayers because the women's fit torso is too short and doesn't overlap with trousers properly.

I love my two NTS tops (long sleeved with zip) - bought them when Cotswold had them at 50% off in previous years. Perfect for autumn / winter running and MTBing.
