Walk Area: Arnside & Silverdale AONB
Walk Date: 19th October 2010
This completes a hat-trick of visits to the area. This walk started at the Leighton Moss RSPB Visitor Centre and after crossing the moss on the causeway I headed towards Leighton Hall. Just before reaching the hall I turned off on a track across the fields to the village of Yealand Storrs and then onto a path towards the English Nature reserve of Gait Barrows with its wonderful limestone scenery and in the springtime the Lady's Slipper Orchid, supposedly Britain's rarest wild flower.
After walking around Gait Barrows I made my way to Hawes Water and then finally to the old Trowbarrow Quarry once home to a Hoffman Kiln and the birthplace of tarmacadam before returning to the visitor centre.
A full route description along with a map and many pictures may now be found on the website for those wishing to do so.
Regards,
Dave
