A dog is for life!Got home this morning from a run, she had fallen over a few times and was caked in mud. So ran her a bath (scared of hose pipes / showers etc) put her in turn around to get a towel, turned back and she got herself wet then shock mud all over my newly painted bathroom walls. 45 minutes of cleaning later I managed to get in the shower. By the time I got into bed she had been sleeping for the best part of an hour.

Yup. Our Jakey doesn't like the shower but he puts up with it; bribery with treats is just about working. His underside gets absolutely caked with mud at the moment, and even tho we aren't too house proud he really has to have a Good Wash. Can't get him to swim, not even in the summer. So the shower it is. No matter how much try there's always a bit you missed...

    C'est la vie.

I wish that I had a four legged friend of the dog kind too now, reading this thread! I have a really great cat, and she is great fun to be with and I do genuinely greatly love her to bits though still! But you cannot take to walks out in the great outdoors with a cat in tow really can you! Saying that, I did once meet a chap walking on the Downs in Sussex with a front daysac on, with his Siamese cat in it! But that was due to the fact it had got used to such modes of travel, from when it was a tiny kitten the guy told me!

Dogs are superior as the outdoors pet, as one can "Due South" it practically anywhere at all these days! Yet with a cat, you just cannot get them at all interested or motivated to trekking off with one, on any sort of a walk or hike! Sigh!!!!

Trevor, if you can't have a dog yourself you could offer to take other people's. My neighbour is 80+ and has a number of people walk her dog for he since she broke her hip and cant take him out herself.

Or volunteer at a local rescue centre, they'd fall over themselves to find someone who can take a dog for a walk.

Might be to far for you Trevor, but there is some good info on dog walking.

Some great points there, sothank you both! I never really thought of taking someone else's dog out for walks! OK I suppose, for shorter outdoors walks at least maybe, most definitely!

This is Flower, my neighbour. I 'borrow' her every so often for walks, but as Trevor suggests, we're limited to shorter walks because we can't build up her fitness. I don't mind doing some shorter walks though, because it's so much fun going with a dog.

I got Sky November 2006, she was a stray and had been in the home for 6 weeks when we chose her. During that 6 weeks she would only get at best one short walk a day and a few hours in a small run. The home has would love spend more time walking their dogs however they usually have over 100 dogs and only some many dog walkers. When we first got her she could only cope with 2 * 20 minute walks a day, this has now built up to 30+ miles a week and she would do more ifI could keep up. She has put on just over4 Kg in weight.

This is our's, Jake, he's a rescue too. He was given up when he tried to chew through a door and very nearly made it. He didn't eat for the first week or so we had him he was so stressed. He now loves walks, knows how to spell, chases shadows and given half a chance cars, and loves going places in the Truck!

Hmm, posting the image didn't work. It took ages sat at 'resizing your image'. Oh well, here's a link to the gallery: Jake in the early morning sun
