Ok, so I've found the stove/kettle combo going cheap somewhere and I'm quite tempted to replace my hardcore hexxy stove. My question is: How tall is the whole contraption when in cooking mode, i.e canister, pocketrocket, kettle. I need to know for the purposes of cooking in my tent. I'm quite new to that, I always thought with a hexxy cooker it was a bit of a foolish idea =)

    Hi Simon,

    With 100ml gas =23cm

    with 250ml gas =26cm

Its a great combo but i struggle to get the 100ml gas and stove in the kettle and closed lid "perhaps its just me?"

    Hope this helps :-)

Cheers, I'll be going for that combination, I think.

    Simon,

Just a pointer, your stove will come in a red plastic case (Save it) you will use this the odd time and as the edges of the rocket are a tad sharp and will puncture software if its packed loose inside your bag :-)

I'll bear that in mind... Mine will mostly live inside the kettle with the gas and thus not need its case, but I'm never one to throw things away and I will be keeping it.

You'll find that the Pocket Rocket, even on a 100 cartridge, is just too tall to make any effective use of a standard height MSR foil windshield!!
(But not such a problem if you're cooking in your tent...)

    See here, SS, and here.

The second one's taken in a Laser Competition porch.

Also consider the Primus Micron stove, btw. Chris Townsend did some tests a few years ago and found it to be the most fuel efficient of those small stoves. If you search in Googlegroups in uk.rec.walking you can find what he said about them.

    Matt,

have you had any problems stowing your stove+cartridge inside the kettle?

Sorry soulexpress, when I use the pocket rocket rocket I tend to carry the stove and gas separately and fill the kettle with other things.
But in fact I use my Optimus Nova multifuel stove more often (despite the weight), partly for efficiency in all conditions and partly because I just like it!

(However I recall that I can't sensibly carry the stove inside the kettle if I use the red triangular box, I prefer to put my mug inside and they won't both fit. And a 250 cartridge is a near-interference fit in kettle but doesn't leave room for the stove.)

Cooking? In a tent? Good lord.

A few passes with a file sort's out the sharpy bits on the PRocket (and sheds a few microgramettes ;-)
