I've recently noticed that I get an annoying itchy rash on my arms and tighs at the start of a walk, it does eventually subside, but can be a real distraction.

I'd assumed it may be some form of reaction to the synthetic material of my base layers, but I can't recall experiencing this previously. Could it be the washing powder?

Does anyone else suffer in this way or have any ideas what could be causing it?

Sometimes I get a little spot of irritation under the zip at the neck on my baselayers, regardless of whether it's merino or synthetic. I wash all my kit in soapflakes or tech wash, and it's gone after half an hour at most.
That's no help at all is it.

I'm sure we won't be the only ones that have noticed this "problem".

Can be most embarassing having to scratch my itchy thighs with onlookers... ;-)

It can easily be your washing powder. Did you change brands or even your type of washing powder? Fabric softener?

Have you moved house? Sometimes the difference between hard and soft water can make a difference.

You say it's only at the start. Every time? Occassionally?

Dunno really, just throwing up ideas.

Nope, haven't moved house, pretty sure the washing powders the same and I don't use softeners.

It only seems to effect me for the first hour, afterwards it seems to subside, I get a red itchy rash. My skin doesn't go completely enflamed, but it is noticeably red and rather itchy. I mainly get it on my forearms and sometimes around my thighs.

What then about your soap / shower gel, deodorant etc. Any change there?

It only happens when I wear my base layers, not any other clothing so wouldn't think personal washing products was the cause.

Perhaps it *is* something to do with powder and/or soap etc, but the more natural fibres of your 'normal' clothes don't bother your skin as much as synthetics? You could always experiment by trying different combinations of fabrics and powders etc.

Or... 'normal' clothes tend to be looser fitting than baselayers, so therefore you don't get the same irritation.

I find I get a slightly itchy sensation on my chest when wearing x-static base layers. Again strangely I only seem to notice it for the first 30 mins or so. I don't seem to get it with my other base layers, so I assume its to do with the silver fibres or something?! Weird...

Skin being dried out by the techno wicking fibres, them compensating? hence the itch and then er, no itch
