I found an old Ultimate catalogue from about 1986 when I moved house last year and did some sorting. I always wanted a peapod, but when I finally got a job and some money, they were no more....

I fancied an Ultimate 'Classic Backpacker' (why the strange names?) it was a 3 pole dome with a porch, I have an 88 catalogue so could probably scan and post a shot.

I actually ended up with a Wild Country Quasar, my favourite tent.

The tent on the right is the Ultimate 'The Tent'. LHS is a Helliberg.

I find the 'The Tent' inner a bit saggy, but if you add an elastic to each corner and pull it out it improves the space no end. 'The Tent' is like a limpet when pitched, I can't think it will everget blown away. Decent floorspace for 2 sharing, but headroom is limited by the 'A' frames.

I've got a Peapod 1 and a Peapod 2 which I'm willing to sell. The Peapod 1 is in nearly mint condition. The Peapod 2 is little used but has two small tears in the skirt of the flysheet outside the footprint of the inner tent.

    Available from jacksons camping

It would seem that AMG now own the brand name, to go with Vango, though there's no hint of tents.

That page seems to be out of date although it still shows in a search, check the 'last modified date at the foot of the page, Feb 2001.

Delete everything from the url apart from http://www.jacksons-camping.co.uk/to get the current page with no mention of Phoenix.

AMG do in fact own the Phoenix brand but all they make are Ski Gloves, how the mighty have fallen

Should be 5 at the back and 7 at the door. My kids gave me mine back as 'too old'. Had it at Santa Pod last week and it let me down only after 30 years, and 3 days of solid rain (now theres an oxymoron). Looking to reproof mine too now as a result.

And does anyone know what happened to Ultimate?. A sleeping bag bought at same time as the tent is still going strong but could use a new stuff bag.

Dad and I took a Peapod down Glen Tilt in 1982 - the only thing we missed was a midge net and rather suffered without it! Otherwise it was great and withstood some hoolies of mountain storms at Loch Etchachan ! The Ultimate waistcoats and Hobo jackets did a good job too; as did the shiny, nylon (narrow-footed) Ultimate sleeping bags - the Hollofill was a bulky material but I managed to jam the lot onto a 45 litre Berghaus pack along with 6 days food and all the other clobber! Happy days.

Great to see that Dad is remembered for his columns, books and contributions to the backpacking world ! He'd be quite pleased to see that he made a mark !

Great Blogsite here. Brings back many happy memories of the smell of a nylon tent (the old Karrimor marathon was a favourite home in the hills),the roar of a Svea 123R and the curious consistency of a Mountain House Chilli meal !

    Albest,

And does anyone know what happened to Ultimate?

They went out of business years ago, sadly. The track record of outdoor gear manufacturers suggests it's not a great way of making your fortune.

But stuffsacks are stuffsacks and there should be plenty of choice for a substitute.
