The Etrex 30 is very good but the Etrex20 is considerably cheaper and has most of the key features. What the etrex 30 has is a better compass and an altimeter.

Handtec is offering a the Etrex 30 new at 194 or newly overhauled at 126

and the Etrex 20 new at 120 or newly overhauled at 102. The newly overhauled still come with the full warranty.

Diddi, I ahve bought 3 gps units from Handtec over the yearsand have found them to be really good.

One of the units was a NOH (newly overhauled ) and it never gave me any problems.

I have been using an Etrex20 now for 3 years and am really pleased with it.

As I said in another tread I use free downloaded mapping.

The Etrex 20 has a very sensitive receiver , has never lost signal even in deep valleys in the Pyrenees

I've had an Etrex 30 since they launched, so 4 or 5 years now. I use it on the bike, for walking and for ski touring, and I'm really pleased with it. It does everything I need and more, and the sensitivity and accuracy is pretty impressive, so much better than the Geko it replaced.

Jim's right about the differences between the 30 and the 20, and tbh if I needed to replacemy 30I'm not sure if I'd settle for a 20. It would be a hard choice. The built-in compass is occasionally useful but only through lazyness to avoid pulling out my proper compass. I do find the altitude reading on the 30 are remarkably good (this always used to be the weak point of GPS receivers) but I don't know to what extent that's just the improvement in the receivers or how much the combination with a barometric altimeter improves it.

The only downside for me is that my first unit had to be replaced when it stopped recognising the presence of the mapping SD card. But since Garmin replaced it under warranty I can't really complain.

Jim some very helpful info and I'm thinking of the NOH Etrex 30 for that price.

We need to chat about downloading the maps tho as I tried last year I think off you advice but could never get em to work.
