I don't know if they would still do this, but in Bristol our local newsagent would order any magazines we wanted (if they didn't already get it). If you asked them they would keep you a copy behind the counter for collection. Maybe you local newsagent could do this for you JJ if you didn't want them to deliver?

WHS Staines stocks both TGO and Trail at the moment so I usually pick them up there on a Saturday.

That local shop was the one I had probs with for non-delivery so I don't really trust them any more.

    BUT
I got a copy from WHS in Leeds City Centre today!!!

I only have a small part...

    Parky,

AT Magazine has a very broad canvas.

It gives you great ideas for adventure trips from a weekend upwards, from UK/Europe to the rest of the world.

The weekend trip ideas are the best bit about the mag, and the mag itself is quite thick so you feel like you are getting something for your £2.80.

They do the odd kit review but it never over does it.

AT just seems to always full of original outdoor trip ideas and great articles to boot, eg world travel health, altitude sickness, overland experiences, sea bourne activities etc..

    JJ aka Ninja Otter-Dude,

We made enquiries about the store you mentioned and got this back from our distributor:

"The WHS in Leeds received 34 copies of the Jan 05 issue?
"The reader can request that WHS or indeed any local newsagent set up a
shop-save for them which would mean a copy is put aside for them as soon as
    the title comes in."

    Hope this suggestion helps!

    Many cheers,
    J

    Thanks John and Stephen.

The store that hadn't heard of you was WHS in the White Rose Centre, Leeds; not the WHS Leeds, if that makes any sense....they are 8-10 miles apart.

I may have to subscribe now lol

Pleased to report that after my grumble last year, TGO has been a lot more available in the shops I frequent.

    ? and here it is!

Anyone still having problems, feel free to report them here - we'll get the mag to your local newsagent one way or another.

Sleeping Polar Bear, would you like to kick off?

The only place I've ever seen your mag is Smiths. Newsagents where I live (Camden Town) don't appear to carry it, nor, it has to be said, walking mags in general. Unless they put them on the top shelf. I wouldn't want to order it because I might not fancy a particular issue. You're not distributed by Central or Comag are you?

You don't reach Longford Post Office in Coventry (newsagent and offlicence as well as post office). I don't want to have a subscription because I can't always afford it, and don't always have time to read, but it would be nice to know that, should I fancy a copy, I don't have to drive into the City Centre

Well it still wasn't in my local Smith's (Caernarfon) yesterday. It's late every month, but this is silly! Nobody else stocks TGO.

But i just heard there's free socks with the subscription this month, if that's for a 1 year then i'm finally going to take the plunge (useful gifts seem to be with 2 year subs only).

TBH an insulated mug is the last thing i need as that would mean my coffee *never* cools to drinking temperature, i hate coffee too hot (almost as much as waiting for it to cool in the first place!)

    Socks, now that's tempting.

Dave - the socks only come in one size and it's for two years.

A newsagents view (or ex newsagents anyway). Please don't subscribe - newsagents make very little money on mags but placing a regular order will ensure that you get the mag every month and put a little back into the local community. Choose a small independant if you have the choice.

Why don't they stock it? Well, because we have to pay for the mags in advance (on delivery or within about 5 days thereof depending on the actual day its delivered)and then we claim back the money a month to 6 weeks later if we don't sell them and return the mag. That means we have to choose to stock things with a high chance of selling. Cash flow is tight and small business can't afford to have thousands sat on a shelf for a whole month.

If you repeatedly order something then return it everymonth the supplier won't let you have it anymore. THis means that sometimes the newsagent has no choice in weither they can stock it.

A newsagent is tied to one supplier too. They cannot shop around and if the supplier cuts there stock there is nothing they can do about it.

Also bear in mind that WH SMiths control large parts of the supply and John Menzies in other areas. So, they supply there store and their competition - makes sense? No. I agree. THis means they effectively control there competition in an underhand way.

Agreed mate - whs and menzies are operating a stitch-up that makes it harder for readers to get their mags (especially low circulation specialist titles) while also making it harder for some publishers to get their stuff distributed properply. I think they used to call it a cartel. I can understand why mags want you to subscribe, cos WHS and distributors want publishers to pay them to display their mags in the shops; how are mags supposed to survive when they have to pay to be sold? So WHS and the others get paid to sell mags that they already make a profit on! No one wins, except WHS!!!!!!

So buy/order your mags from local newsagents (who get them from WHS wholesale - ironic, innit!!!!) OR subscribe and help small publishers?

What really cripples the small newsagents is that you have to pay for the stuff that sits on the shelf and then you get your money back a week after you return it - so they get your money for upto 5 weeks. Its one of the only industries that does this.

Its also the only industry where you cannot choose your supplier, nor can you stop them supplying a competitor. When we bought our shop we were at one end of the village and there was another newsagent at the other. This was fine, then they supplied newspapers and magazines to the Co-op - slap bang between the two of us, with car parking and outside the main school, (who get 30days credit and pay in arrears instead of in advance). We went out of the business virtually overnight inspite of opening at 5am and shutting at 6pm (7days).

Our suppliers - WH Smiths changed our orders everyweek sending us expensive mags we never sold and didn't order, and cutting popular titles we did sell out of. They cut our papers too and failed to supply any on a number of occassions. The Co-op never had this problem. They ordered their selection and got it, always.

We thought we would specialise to compete - have the mags no-one else took in the area; walking, climbing, fishing, train spotting, niche market stuff. They wouldn't let us - some months it arrived, sometimes it didn't, when it didn't the customers went to WH SMiths in the main town and we lost another customer. They only need to find it unavailable once and they will go elsewhere.
