    Clicky.

Some of the prices are... interesting, when you think of the sort of levels that usually result in "how much!" gasps around here.

And not one of them mentioned how 'lightweight' it was .

Petesy reviewed a new 'traditional' style rucksack on his website about a year ago that was made of canvas with leather straps and was designed for hill use. It was a Scottish manufacturer (small company ) if I remember correctly.

I haven't seen anything about it since but apart from the extra weight it seemed to carry okay according to him.

I've always liked the look of these older style rucksacks, especially once they are 'worn in' a bit.

As for the Guardian's selection, I'm sure they carry well enough from the taxi to the Cappuccino bar.

Who started this craze, though... Fjallraven. The North Face and Patagonia weren't far behind but it was Fjallraven's little 'Swedish child' bag that started the movement for the retro bag.

The ones in those photos look hideous but for what it matters I definitely prefer 'old' rucksacks to new ones. The old-school Pod, Karrimor, Lowe Alpine, Macpac and Aiguille sacks are absolutely awesome and I don't think have really been bettered. When looking for a rucksack now I'd probably only look at Aiguille, second hand, or Blue Ice.

Just a few days ago, 2000 miles from home, I was on a bus full of drag queens...

(Please... do not scoff... this is absolutely true!)

... and none of them was sporting a rucksack as good as those.

The one that amazed me was the £290 bag (no.9)...from Topshop!
