October probably best for TBW and I, either 11th-13th or 25th-27th

Dependent on whether you come or not?

If you do make it, got any good route suggestions?

I haven't got much on the yearplanner but my dates will be the same - any weekend except 14-15 Sept or 12-13 October.

Can you fit in any other weekend in Sept or Oct, James?

Teesdale Viking and I can't do the earlier one. But I'm free for the 25-27.

Of course, it also depends on the availability of the barn. I will ring the owner and check.

That turned out to be prescient!

I just phoned the Barrowburn Camping Barn and asked about weekend availability in September and October.

The barn is free for only the first two weekends in September. It is not free for any weekends in October.

So the choice seems to be early September or defer until November (if there was early snow we'd need 4x4s because the road is not gritted past Alwinton, five miles down the valley).

    What do y'all reckon?

Ha Ha I've just checked the map.I will need to take the 'scenic' route to get there - all around the Borders, and then some !!!

Depending where you are coming from, there might be an easier route.

The public road to Barrowburn runs west from Harbottle and Alwinton to a semi-derelict farmstead called Makendon. This section of road is in the 'open access area' of the MOD's Otterburn Range.

From Makendon, the road appears to be a dead end on the map. From this point it enters the 'controlled access area' of the range. The metalled road continues from Makendon as an MOD road to Chew Green then up to Cottonshope Head and down to the A68 trunk road near Byrness.

This controlled MOD road from the A68 to Cottonshope (and onward to Makendon, Barrowburn and Alwinton) is open to the public for much of the time: it is only closed when there is live firing on the range. Firing is indicated by red flags - if no flags are flying the public is permitted to use the road.

To get advance notice of 'red flag days' contact Range Control on 01830 520569.

Thanks Skip, that will info. will certainly help.

However, my route still sounds like a grand tour of the Borders towns:- Biggar, Peebles, Innerleithen, Galashiels, Melrose and Jedburgh !!

I'm afraid I can't do first 2 weeks in September (assuming you mean 6/7th and 13/14th) as I'll be on hols in Scotland.

I can do November, but not weekend of Snowdonia Barn Meet (15/16th) nor end of November (29/30th) - would prefer beginning....

I hope to go to the Snowdonia meet too. I can't do the weekend of 9-10 November because I'll be on Great Gable for the Act of Remembrance. So it would need to be that first weekend.

As the barn seems to be so fully booked I think we need to decide quickly
in case we lose the few available weekends left to us. So ...
... who can do the first weekend of November?
