No matter how many times I wash my Velez smock (following the instructions) it always has a distinct odour to it and my wife is threatening to throw it out. Anyone else noticed this or am I doing something wrong?

If it's a 'body odour' rather than the Nikwaxy waxy odour, go for the full washing sequence:

    Biological wash in washing machine.
    Thorough rinse.
Machine wash in pure soap or Techwash or Graingers equivalent.
Washing machine cycle with TX-Direct or Graingers equivalent.

It's perfectly fine to use biological stuff as long as you thoroughly rinse it all out afterwards.

Nikwax TX-10 imparts a chemical odour to Paramo garments.

Use nice smelling soap flakes instead.

When you reproof it you'll also get a (different) chemical smell.

You don't notice either 10 minutes after putting them on.

aye, there is either a "fatty" smell or a "petrolly" smell. sometimes you are entertained by both. it's no better and certainly no worse than cutesy ponging fabric conditioners.

the fatty smell (from the soap and also noticed when using soap flakes) can be reduced by rinsing a few times.

the petrolly one - after proofing and tumble drying - can be reduced by a short plain water wash and another tumble dry.

if it's body odour pong (? well done) then a full and proper wash cycle will get rid of it. use oxyclean in the initial wash or detto with proper detregent.wash it again in detergent. wash it again in soap and proof.

i wash mine at 50C to get rid of the crud. (no repsonsibility taken if you follow this path)

Definitely the 'petrolly' smell rather than the 'fatty' smell! Will try the extra water wash.

If the smell doesn't bother you just retaliate with similar threats to the wife.
