Brynje base layers have been around for years, they just aren't 'mainstream' enough to be popular. I still have some vests bought 20 years ago during a trip to Norway that are as good as the day I bought them. Still my first choice for winter use.

Mike, you haven't really got a YMCA vest, have you?? Shame on you! I think proof is required! Go on, you know you want to . . . . .

Anyone tried them under a Paramo smock or jacket? Just curious how effective they would be under a loose garment. I normally only have a base layer under Paramo. I used to find the old cotton string vests good under a wool shirt. (edit - just seen on ebay that Brynje still do the cotton vests)

A few more options here including merino & the version Jon's wearing with the covered shoulders. They are listed as unisex

Guess if its too loose you won't get any warmth - there's certainly no wind resistance! If the Paramo stuff gets a decent seal then you'd think ideal as it'd work very well indeed with the venting.

An rather interesting comparison with Paramo's recent reversed grid base layers actually as they are after the same sort of effect. (They're effectively a mesh with a thin base layer underneath, all in one.). Don't think there's any question which has (marginally?) better technical performance, but presumably even P****o customers have their limits

My problem with this stuff would be that I keep using trains/buses....

Hi all. Rhodri Lewis from Nordiclife here. Love the discussion. I just wanted to jump in and address a few points. Smell: It's synthetic so yes, it will smell a little after multiday use. However, for those who want smell free performance, as Jon pointed out, we do a Merino version. Again, Jon is correct in saying that the wicking performance is not quite as good as the synthetic, but still will be better than any solid layer.

Womens version: The kit is unisex

See through-ness: You don't wear this top by itself (unless you are off to a Soho night club....which is perfectl fine by the way!) You use a cap layer which can be any solid base layer you already own.....or you can buy one from us!

There is loads more information on the website, but please feel free to call, email or chat live online if you have any questions. We really feel that this is the ultimate perfomer when it comes to base layers.

Rhodri - I'm unlikley to find anywhere local who stocks them so likely to buy mail order. One site that sells the top with shoulder inlay has a size guide of L for 42" chest & XL for 45" chest. I'm 44". Which do you reckon would be the best to go for? I don't want it loose-fit.
