Hi, Can anyone recommend a Campsite handy for walking in the MacGillicuddy's Reeks area? One within walking distance of a pub would be nice.

    Hi Andrew.

There is camping at Loch Acoose which is very handy for the Reeks, but not within walking distance of a pub.

There's a campsite in Glenbeigh within spitting distance of one pub/hotel and walking distance of Glenbeigh village which has about 3 more pubs. Also one at Fossa between Killarney and Killorglin, though not such a nice area as Glenbeigh.

I don't know the Climbers Inn at Glencar, but it's well-known as.. well, a climbers' inn. They do camping there but no idea about the facilities.

btw, for walking in the Reeks, get the Harvey's map for preference over the Irish OS 1:50 maps, though coverage is restricted. The Irish OS 1:25 of Killarney National Park is a waste of money.

    Thanks Kate,

That gives me plenty to think about. The advice on the Harvey's map is also much appreciated. I have ordered one today.

As Kate says, but depends on what "walking distance" means. What part of 'Reeks you are doing or coming from.

There is a pub in Shanacashel, about 3km west of Lough Acoose. one at Cahoonahone, (would have to be a wild camp).
