haha, brilliant - 'yes, well done you for being able to keep up!' - and of course, who ever said it no doubt said it kindly. And I think you're right - all of us can feel like the one who can't keep up. Thing is, I think there are a lot of women who feel like that. I do think things have moved on a lot (yawn, I'm sounding my age here!) - regularly seeing lots of pics of women in the mountain press, great gear & clothing designed especially for women, and an awful lot of really happy, confident women at indoor walls & leading at crags does help enormously.

I think single sex courses, trips, days out with your pals, whatever, are great, but I wouldn't choose it all the time either.

    Thanks for the welcome

I too was recently on an outdoors course where I was the only woman. I was also signifcantly older than nearly everyone else and got pissed off - given that it was a Mountain Leadership course - that they usually forgot that I wasn't going to be able to keep up with young men over 20 years my junior!

I've been there, too. The real pisser was "who's got the biggest rucksack?" i.e. who has space to spare. "Oh, you can carry the rope, then".
So, smaller shoulders, naturally less muscular, 20 years older, having to walk faster to keep up because I have a small gait AND carrying the rope.
I can see the point of Chicks Unleashed.

Just so it's clear, Rosie's contributed to the site in the past, I think it's great that Chicks Unleashed exists and I can totally understand why. Yes, it is strictly speaking a commercial post, but it's also newsworthy in that it's a relatively rare opportunity for women who'd prefer to learn outdoor skills in a supportive, all-women environment, to do just that, which is why this thread is still here, though perhaps I should have posted earlier.

Oh, and I'd do anything for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake and can we cut out the overt abuse please.

The question is, who bloody tied 'em up in the first place? I think we should be told.

It depends on the cake. I'm quite fussy like that.

Just want to say that the Chick Unleashed Social Meets are a very informal set up, very like the way OM meets are. It's been a while since I was last on one but they are a great way of networking for finding walking/climbing partners - just like OM

The singel sex thing I can fully appreciate may seem strange to some but for many women they may not feel as intimidated in a single sex environment.

Hope the meet goes well Rosie.

A great example of Mountain Leadership, then.

Quite. Though I should point out that it was the lads taking the course with me who largely forgot rather than the instructors.

Mid-way through the morning of day 2 on the expedition, on a fairly stiff uphill section, I - half jokingly - commented that they had 20 years on me. There was one other older guy in our group and we both lagged at the back. Eventually the instructor (who'd checked with me earlier that there wasn't anything actually wrong with me) asked the younger lads what was going on - and they hadn't noticed. I guess it's a good indicator of the importance of getting a lot of experience before going for the ML assessment, as well as being aware of the abilities, behaviour and dynamics of your group.

The party moves at the pace of the slowest member. Isn't that basic "leadership"?

I may have picked that up wrong as I'm a bit of a dawdler at heart
