I am helping run a walk in the Blackhill area, near Airdrie on 6th November 2010 to highlight local rights of way. All details can be found here:

If you are local (or even if you aren't) and fancy coming along, please do.

Good to see you taking action, but aren't 'rights of way' obsolete since the 'right to roam' legislation? We can walk almost where we (gods children) like now?

Being a right of way gives a route some protection, especially where future land use changes may come in to play. One of the rights of way I'm trying to highlight was threatened by a wind turbine development some time back (and possibly will be again).

Some of these rights of way are being blocked by farmers using barbed wire, padlocked gates and electric fencing. The 'Get orf moi laand' mentality is strong with some farmers here, and routes which were once used by horse riders are slowly being shut- and they shouldn't be. Unfortunately the local access officers have not been as forceful as they could be, and these fellows get cocky, chipping away and deterring access. After long enough they can say 'no one uses it anymore' and the right of way can be lost altogether, and when that happens the gates and stiles can be dismantled, never to be replaced.

Airdrie as a town may not have much going for it, but these paths and the land they cross are a great escape, a bit of open space for all to enjoy, and that's worth keeping.

We've had a good response to this, and the weather is improving for Saturday so fingers crossed for an enjoyable day.

The weather was damp, the views short lived, but the company was good and the day was enjoyable.
