Have a look for ffmpeg ; I use the mac version (ffmpegX) but I'm pretty sure it can do the job. The interface is a bit fiddly but it'll probably be one of the 'presets' to get what you're after.

Evidently it is possible but you don't have to use the command - line methods ; there are plenty of free software front-ends to ffmpeg that will do the encoding...

On a mac, using ffmpegX, you get something like this:

I'm sure there are PC users who'll tell me which freeware to use to achieve the same effect.

I'm using Handbrake, cross-platform and fairly easy to use. Not tried a rip from disc yet. Most of my library has subtitles. desu

Well after many a night and day trying all types of free trials to which none were any good or actually did manage to rip a dvd to mp4 fully i ended up going with the Imtoo which Parky suggested.

At first the trial version would only do each chapter in 5 minute maximum rips so i went to play and managed to find a Keygen two minutes later and hey! presto! full valid version and im happy ripping away as we speak.

Was not an easy journey but i got there in the end.

    Thanks for the links guys....

list on Ipod so far :

Ice Age 3 dawn of the dinasour

    Simpsons the movie

    Harry potter (Goblet of fire)

    Eragon.

    Transformers 1.

Glad you solved your problem. I use Handbrake, on a 64bit Linux , compile from source, its faster than on Windoze. If I'm doing a fair old trip of a few weeks, I'll crank down the quality and put about 30-50 hours on my iPOD with plenty of Podcasts, carry a USB charger battery charger. I now get the kids cast-offs, my nano 3g will become a nano 5g after my daughter gets a Touch and it all filters down.

In a dark tent, I could get about 24 hours of video with brightness to minimum. I guess the Touch will get less as bigger screen.

I've also used Handbrake on my mac... and I believe it uses ffmpeg codecs to do the job...

Good recommendation that... but if you found a tool that works... problem solved!

To actually rip from the disk you need something like MPlayer (free). You then need to transcode the ripped files, using ffmpeg, as has already been suggested. Being a Linux user I have a bash script that does it all for me. If you are using the "W" abomination I suggest you look at either the Super converter (Google Super video converter), or Win FF, both of which are free frontends for ffmpeg.

As others have said, Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) is free, cross platform, and does a great job. I've used it for ripping loads of dvds and I think you can also put other video formats into it and out the other end will come mp4s. Has good support for subtitles too. It has settings specifically for ipods too, since you can use a small, lower quality video for them.

trying before you buy. not stealing. depending upon ones perspective. a bit like copying your cds. or ripping a dvd in the first place.

Handbrake has just converted a 1.4gb film to 257mb for me, working great on my 5800.

Cheers for the heads up on it, i've struggled with endless programmes, non of which have worked for me.

No but i did buy an Ipod that comes with Itunes, why he hell does it not come in the Itunes package?

I would not go and purchase a product until i fully understand its capabillities andif its the one i can use with ease not knowing anything about ripping dvd to mp4 previously.

    If i like ill buy.
