I normally revel in the peace and quiet and love the solitude of the mountains...but... it's the World Cup and I'm wondering if any of you have ever tried to watch TV on one of those protable 3" or so TVs?

If so, could you let me know your thoughts on quality / reception etc...

One word DIGITAL. They're all analogue and due to the switch over they are now defunct unless you have a separate box and the power supply to make it work. I never thought of that problem until a guy who was wildcamping in the Lakes hills with his bike who comnplained about lugging his little tv and heavy batteries up only to find it didn't work due to the analogue signal having been switched off.

That is assuming you are in the UK and the digital areas. We've been switched over for so long now that I have kind of assumed everyone else is too.

My advice is to wildcamp in a location within easy access to a pub as a lot of pubs will have it on. Even the remote ones I reckon. My tip is Angle Tarn = ODG, T'other Angle Tarn = White Lion in Patterdale. I'm sure there are others too such as Near Bridge of Orchy pub. Of course the counties of Scotlandshire and Wales are probably not going to be as fussed to have it on as Englandshire for some reason. Or at least that is what my round ball following contacts have told me.

Get a sports radio and revell in Alan Greens diatribes, especially if we are losing .Seriously the radio commentary is better than terrestrial tho not Sky IMO. I regularly have the TV on with no sound and Radio 5 as commentary.

Amazing at times if you switch over as you would think they are watching different matches. Commentators get hooked on an aspect, decision, player and proceed to bang on about .I have long campaigned for the retirement of John Motson tho Jonathan Pearce now often out scores him on useless facts. Adrian Chiles will win the day on coverage.

    When do I switch?

The colour-coded map shows which areas have switched (although there's no obvious mention of that); grey is switched, magenta is unswitched/switching.

But everything will switch from 2012, with the London region being the last (most densely populated, I guess).

Blimey. Think of all that lost revenue... They'll have to use the extortionate pay phones to entertain themselves, instead.

Patients not having TV? It's a scandal. Questions should be asked in the House... I mean, let's get our priorites right; we don't need all those fancy x-ray scanners and things, we just need the essentials of life, like a TV on each bed.

    "Bread and circuses", eh?

Watch it on your phone if you are that desperate.

(Has a vision/hope of lots of English accented screams in the Highlands, as bodies jump off high placeswhen the USA gub England )

No they've got to meet Germany otherwise the tabloids won't get to make use of their collection of WW 2 derived clichés.

Does Scotland still have a national football team, I hadn't noticed?

Scotland could come and join the English and Welsh cricket board... it's the only way the Welsh win any World Cups, so I wouldn't begrudge Scotland their share of the glory.

I knew some one would bite!

Luckily for England, Woody isn't playing for the USA on Saturday.

The press could have a field day if the USA beat England. Useless Shower of A*******s!

He, he... more of a nibble Mike.

Not holding any hopes myself. England as a nation seems fairly subdued compared to normal. Saying that, I thought the same at the last rugby WC and we ended up getting to the final. So who knows.

I remember when the German player Kuntz, leveled the scores to eventually knock us out of the 96 Euro's in the semi's. You can imagine the headlines!!!

I always look forward to the English media turning on the team. The picture of Taylor as a Swedehead was a classic.

Meanwhile, I bet the Scottish media would love the chance.

The lack of money in the Scottish game these days might actually improve our national team. Homegrown players will be more numerous in the Scottish domestic game, instead of over-paid, second rate foreigners.
