Hi, I am currently producing a report on the brand Berghaus for my clothing design marketing degree work and want to know your thoughts on their range of gear. Any answers would be helpful I would really appreciate it.

What do you like about Berghaus?

What do you dislike about Berghaus?

Do you think they are affordable?

Who is a good alternative to Berghaus?

Did you know that they are a British company?

Do you think they are of good quality?

What age group in particular would buy from Berghaus?

Do you visit their flagship stores, buy their items from other stores or do you shop online?

How much would you spend a year on Berghaus items?

Thankyou so much for your help

What do you like about Berghaus? Nothing really in all fairness i am out of touch as i cannot remember the last time i even considered the brand on a shopping trip.

What do you dislike about Berghaus? Hard to find in the shops and does not compete on price with some of the up and coming brands, spec to spec.

Do you think they are affordable? I wouldn't know but if they are still selling the Mera peak at +£200 TOOO Expensive

Who is a good alternative to Berghaus? All i can say is i own RAB, Montane, Golite, Decathlon, Mountain Hardwear, Salomon

Did you know that they are a British company? Yes

Do you think they are of good quality? Cannot comment on new stuff but i had a micro fleece zip top that lasted forever.

What age group in particular would buy from Berghaus? A good business should appeal to all age groups with different lines, it aint that hard to design a product range to suit all ages.

Do you visit their flagship stores, buy their items from other stores or do you shop online? If i bought their stuff it would be online, but doubt i would even look at the brand unless there was an amazing offer.

How much would you spend a year on Berghaus items? Cannot say but i spend in excess of £1000 per annum on gear.

Middle of the range gear. I haven't bought any since a shoulder strap pulled off a pack on the second day of a 2 week trek many years ago.

What do you like about Berghaus? The odd piece ofgood value kit.

What do you dislike about Berghaus? Adopted by Chavs, Cut of a lot of their kit.

Do you think they are affordable? Some of their stuff is.

Who is a good alternative to Berghaus? Rab, Montane, Haglofs, North Face.

Did you know that they are a British company? Yes

Do you think they are of good quality? Same as all mass porduced stuff.

What age group in particular would buy from Berghaus? 12-30 (most likely not paying though!)

Do you visit their flagship stores, buy their items from other stores or do you shop online? They have flagship stores??

How much would you spend a year on Berghaus items? Nil

NB: Worth pointing out I live in Newcastle where Berghaus is pretty much the jacket of choice for Chavs, hence their loss of their outdoor pedigree.

Berghaus do a lot of mass market gear and some of it is very average, and probably overpriced because they trade on their name. But they also do some very good stuff -- the Combust jacket, for example, is an excellent genuine belay jacket (as opposed a very warm mid-layer) that stands on a par with anything else around. Some of their softshell tousers are also very good, and cheaper than others of comparable spec. The qualaity generally seems ok to me -- not perfect, but on a par with some of the high end brands.

Solid stuff if you're starting out and don't know anything about technical gear. Offer different leg lengths in a reasonable range of their stuff.

    Some of it.

Who is a good alternative to Berghaus?

    Rab, Montane, Marmot, Haglofs.

Did you know that they are a British company?

    Yes

Do you think they are of good quality?

Most of the stuff I have is.

No idea. Not a lot I suspect.

Normally, I wouldn't stretch so far as answering all those questions, but as I find myself agreeing mostly with Simon Barry's comments, count me as a 'ditto'.

It says 'good alternative', Ray, it doesn't say anything to do with price. I'd pay the money for a quality piece of specialist kit that does its job, fits well, and isn't a stupid 'girly' colour that's going to get dirty on its first excursion.

Here Here Kate, i am of the same opinion, if a bit of kit is worth having the price is irrelevant within reason. I take it further aswell and if i see something i like on offer etc, i will by 3 of the same thing for future use!

What do you like about Berghaus?

Their history, their country of origin, their sponosored team, some of their kit (rucksacks for one). Their Attrition jacket is serious. The best jacket in its class by a mile and a return to the company's routes.

What do you dislike about Berghaus?

Some of their gear is aimed at the high street. Not a lot of really innovative stuff.

Do you think they are affordable?

    Yes, generally.

Who is a good alternative to Berghaus?

    ME, Montane, Rab.

Did you know that they are a British company?

    Yes

Do you think they are of good quality?

    Yes, generally.

What age group in particular would buy from Berghaus?

Oohhh... don't know. Big mix. I would like to think it was people who know what they're doing, but often it's not.

Do you visit their flagship stores, buy their items from other stores or do you shop online?

    online/other shops.

How much would you spend a year on Berghaus items?

    ~£50

I remember berghaus as a big name in outdoors gear in the eighties but couldn't afford that kind of money. I was aware that it sprang into the high street soon after and even then iwas a little concerned that mass production might mean a drop in quality. Since taking up walking again nearly four years ago i have had a pair of explorerV boots that lost two lace hooks on the third wear, started to fray around the seams and lets water in around the tongue so god knows where the goretex lining is. A berghaus g'tex coat let water in pretty much straight away, (but that might not be necessarily berghaus's fault) but my g'friend's berghaus daysack seems to be behaving o.k. though. My experience ends there. My impression is that they are average in quality and price and i'm not particularly drawn to the brand. Didn't know they were british. Probably wouldn't buy any more gear unless highly recommended as a 'bargain' by experienced outdoors people.

    good luck

What do you like about Berghaus? - they make a good ange of poduct

What do you dislike about Berghaus? - they always seem to be a long way behind the cuve, for example they seemed to be the last company to intoduce pitzips fo wamth managment.

Do you think they are affordable? no, they seem to be more expensive than equivalent products

Who is a good alternative to Berghaus? most companies

Did you know that they are a British company? no, for some reason I always thought they were german, maybe it was the colours they used to use.

Do you think they are of good quality? yes

What age group in particular would buy from Berghaus? 40-50s

Do you visit their flagship stores, buy their items from other stores or do you shop online? online or othe stores

How much would you spend a year on Berghaus items? as least as possible

In general I don't like Berghaus, they are expensive for what they are, and their colourways used to be so old fashioned, but they have improved since. They also seemed to lag behind new ideas, usually about two or three seasons before adopting industry wide ideas.

They seem to take a high handed view of their own product in relation to the rest if the industry - they may have been the best once, but they are below average now

But if you had bought one two years ago when they first came out you would have only paid £280 like me .

What do you like about Berghaus? Readily available locally. Base layer is OK but I prefer merino generally now.

What do you dislike about Berghaus? Not tested properly. Behind the times in jacket design. Some kit is more suited for shopping or travel than anything strenuous. More specifically:

I bought the C7 rucksack. A lot of work had gone into the bioflex support system. It fitted well and did the job. BUT it squeaked all the time, and this is a common problem, not just mine. So either Berghaus did not bother to field test it or they did, knew about the squeak and did not bother to sort it out.

The Mera Peak jacket is too heavy, doesn't breathe well enough and the pockets are fouled by a hip belt of a rucksack. It could do with pit zips. I think the new version is just the same so Berghaus are not learning from their mistakes and/or not reading/not responding to bad reviews. It is fine for shopping or BBC reporters but not one for the outdoor enthusiast IMHO.

Do you think they are affordable? Some items are, others too pricey.

Who is a good alternative to Berghaus? Rab and plenty of others

Did you know that they are a British company? Yes, but I doubt if anything is manufactured in UK

Do you think they are of good quality? Middle of the road.

What age group in particular would buy from Berghaus? Mainly old folk around here.

Do you visit their flagship stores, buy their items from other stores or do you shop online? I have never seen a 'flagship' store. Would buy at any shop e.g. Blacks or online

How much would you spend a year on Berghaus items?
