    Hi there anybody,

I live in Snowdonia, Dolgellau to be precise.

Iam wanting to start a Walking Festival here but I don't quite know how to start, I work in the outdoors and am involved in outdoor retailing and I am not a kid who is wet behind the ears just someone who wants to raise the profile of walking in mid wales and make some more money for everyone in the town, perhaps it might save us from going bankrupt.
If anybody has any advise or can offer some help it would be much appreciated. Thanx Jamie.

Jamie, the place for area-based walking festivals is Ireland where there's a a long tradition of them - the Ramblers Association also hold 'festivals' but they seem to be more programmes of walks by local groups rather than a fully organised gathering.

    I found this:

    http://www.csmonitor.com/durable/2000/05/31/p15s2.htm
using Google. It's a listing of festivals in the UK last year complete with e-mail contacts. Might make sense to mail some of the organisers and ask them if they have any advice. Plus the obvious - talk to the local tourist board, chamber of commerce or whatever, individualy to hotels, outdoor retailers etc. Start some sort of brainstorming committee to kick ideas around. See if any of the large manufacturers would consider supporting you - particularly locally-based ones, howabout Gelert for example?

It sounds like a great idea to me. Works well in Ireland, so why not in Wales. Before foot and mouth happened, we were at the point of planning some sort of OUTDOORSmagic walk and the favoured destination seemed to be North Wales, so there's no shortage of interest in the area.

Hope that's some help. If you want to kick ideas around on the forum, I'm sure people will be more than happy to respond.

    Jon
