You will spend your money in Iceland, Paddy. Lots of it.

Yeah... I've always understood it's VERY expensive... but if they could just see their way to dropping the prices on a few basic essentials, that would encourage me greatly!

I think we owe a world of debt to Iceland, for one thing, their mid atlantic rift thingy has done a great job of removing North America from the west coast of Scotland. Job well done I say.

Sadly... my immediate plans are taking me away from that particular Atlantic rift, to another Atlantic rift with more sunshine at this time of year... yep... the Canary Islands.

    Atlantic rift?

Isn't that due to improve in January when the civilised world gets rid of Bush?

    Paddy

    How sad.

Will you be accompanied by you faithful Psion? Will you be able to post if not too busy?

Yeah - the trusty Psion is coming along for the ride - the old faithful workhorse that does ten times the amount of work that my cumbersome desktop does.

And no - I never post when I'm away - I just get on with the walking to the exclusion of everything. I don't carry any internet-enabled kit and I don't visit cyber-cafes.

Nowadays! It wasn't always thus. There was a time they wouldn't step outside the door in anything more than a force 3. A good stiffening with transferred RN pilots and crew changed all that.

Can you remember RNAS Brawdy, Tony, aka HMS Goldcrest?

Their SAR cab used to cover the Pembrokeshire coast and The BBNP until about 1973. They pulled off some spectacular rescues in the foulest of conditions. I made a couple of trips with them and a couple with the RAF Manston cab to remain qualified for air medic pay. I also did one trip with the RNAS Arbroath boys who scared the living daylights out of me with their antics in the Eastern Highlands.

No, I can't ever remember Brawdy as anything other than an RAF station with initially wessex and then 202 squadron Sea Kings with whom I flew regularly until they completely shut the place in favour of RAF Chivenor!

I've no strong feelings either way about Iceland, to be honest. But, if my sympathies are to be directed towards any country in particular, Iceland probably isnt top of my list right now. I'm sure the folk in the DR Congo would glady trade places with those troubled Icelandic peeps at the proverbial drop of a hat.

really? maybe you should try and get out more.

One does not need to "get out more" to make the observation that you were making a predictable joke that has been made many, many times already.

The OP was making the point that things are really bad in Iceland at the moment and maybe we shoudn'tbe makingjokes about it. But, hey, I don't get out much. I expect you'vegot some reallly funny jokes aboutthe wars in Africa or maybe AIDS or something.

Freezing cold and the pervasive smell of fish. You have to sympathise.

    Don't you?

Michael - I agree with you. In fact there's a long list of countries in dire straits. I have a soft spot for Iceland, but that's not to deny others their suffering. This thread has sort off been taken off topic now though so I'll let the jokes continue here and go talk to others about genocide and starvation.

you really think the plight of the Icelandics bears any comparison with the starvation/drought/famine/wars/torture/AIDS and whatever else is going on in parts of Africa?

Jake, do you realise how tiresome you sound?

Glyn, suffering is relative when your life doesn't seem worth living any more, regardless of where you reside, so go easy on the semantics. And Jake isn't being tiresome, he's just showing some heart.
