For those of us who have a soft spot for Iceland and its people, this makes heartbreaking listening:

The Icelanders have been screwedbig style by their bankers and politicians and there is a very real possibility of major social breakdown there.

Don't think that the UK is exempt from greedy financiers and incompetent politicians either. Bubbles Brown led us into this mess and hasborrowed billions to throw at the banks in a failed attempt to stimulate the economy. We and future generations will have to repay that cash in the form of higher taxes.

We haven't even started to see the fulleffects of this disaster here in the UK.

    Laugh while you can, Glyn...

Hey, calm down Jake you'll make yourself ill.

Do you mean you actually believed all that consumerist stuff about your inalienable rights.

Yourrole in lifeis to work, watch TV and consume whatever tat your are told you need and of course to produce more little consumers.

This is not a disaster its a marketadjustment - no-one is starving in the developed world-quiet the opposite actually-apart tragically from many poor souls in the third world.

Your hopes, dreams aspirations and imagined essential needs may have to be delayed in their fulfillment for a while -so what....... a bowl of cherries -life aint.

I won't start calling it a disaster until until we start shooting the millions of well fed horses on this island to eat. Don't you agree Jake?

Fred - listen to the programme. People are going without food unless they queue for Red Cross food handouts. Jobs and homes are being taken away. And for many this constitues disaster. Domestic violence is on the increase, as is the suicide rate.

Glyn - I expected that someone would post the sort of joke that you've posted. I just hoped that that someone would think again on this occassion.

    Hi Hayley

Your are obviously a kind hearted empathetic sole but please. What makes foolish people think that the fundamental primitive rules of economics and survival where suspended just because of the glossy credit and retail adverts.

Your cannot borrow and borrow forever without the prospect of increased earnings to pay back plus the pound of flesh.

Primitive agricultural societies knew that they had to put away part of this years harvest just to survive. Iceland has little agriculture, no industry -just fish. What made them think they could live like millionaires with their fancy furniture and 4 by 4's. They will not starve but it will be uncomfortable for them to readjust to the fact that they live on a barren slab of rock in the middle of the north Atlantic.

We should learn from their experience. If you want to help - go hiking there - I hear it is dirt cheap right now.

    Is this uncaring?

It's a beautiful country and the people are as friendly as any on earth. Sounds like the perfect time to go over with a pocket full of dollars.

All Icelanders are evil little pixies except Bjork of course .Even she had to leave that hell hole they call home to learn to sing - in Madchester with 808 State.

I hope some of the 230000 of them are reading this as they will not be welcome in the UK.

During Labours last gutless regime in the 70's thenordic dwarfstook to ramming our destroyers sent to protect British fishermen in international waters knowing that our leaders had ordered the Navy not to retaliate. Labour as always caved in.

Thousands of British Fishermen and their families lost their income as a result - visit any former fishing village and you will find them ghost villages occupied by second homers mostly bankers - see the circularity of what I did there. Back to the fish finger factories with all of them.

I am sure as Dave says, they are nice and friendly to tourists with money - why wouldnt they be. I am also told that Hitler's SS officers had impeccable manners and were great dancers.

    Nice first post John!

I think you will find the demise of the UK fishing industry has more to do with:-

a/ Entering of the EU and the common fisheries policy of that institution. Oh and it was Ted Heath and his happy bunch of socialists responsible for that one wasn't it?

b/ The need to attempt to conserve fish stocks from the massive over fishing that the UK took part in in the 70s.

We can hardly blame the Icelanic nation for attempting to protect their ONLY industry by extending thier commercial rights to the North Atlantic, ater all, we diid the same for NSoil eh?

Nice tongue in cheek post BTW!

I am not ignoring Trolls. Albanians are trolls. They too were beastly to our Navy. Remember how they mined the Corfu Channel in peacetime 1946 without informing anyone and killing 44 British Tars. And they do awful things to goats.

Anyone who puts our Navy at risk is no friend of mine. Remember these are the guys/women who are prepared to turn out in monstrous weather to haul us off the hill at any time.

So thats Icelandic Pixies and Albanian Trolls. Who's next.

That wasn't directed at you John, it was meant for us to ignore the trolls (you)

Personally, I would rather wind them up than ignore them! </blockquote>

Oh BTW, are you in Devon/Cornwall?

I only ask because it is the Brylcream boys who tend to pull us off in our neck of the woods!

I'd love to go to Iceland and spend my money there!

I wanted to go when I was 16, but haven't managed it yet.
