I had some Daisy Roots boots, bought from John Lewis when I was younger. Probably about 8 years ago I'd guess. I seem to remember liking them, they had a sympatex lining.

Ah, Ben. I can vaguely remember when I was still young enough to regard a mere 8 years ago as "the past".

Don't take this comment as mockery. It is envy.

My first hiking boots - Hawkins Helvellyn

Bloody awful - blisters like the Titanic on the Lyke Wake Walk - gave them to a charity shop.

Edit - you mentioned Hawkins while I was typing, Mike

My first boots were Eurohike from Millets in 1981. They cost about £17. Only Eurohike are still going!!!

Used to walk in my Green Flash before then. They'll bring back memories!

A lot of my early kit came from the Famous Army Stores. Every High Street had one. Whatever happened to them all?

My first 'pack', for example was an ex-French army gas-mask bag. It didn't contain a gas-mask any more, but it did contain a spare eyepiece for one!

Famous Army stores went into receivership round 6 years ago and 47 of it's outlets were purchased by Blacks.

They closed many branches and reopened some as either Blacks or Millets stores!

I had many a good trip to FAS in the 80s and 90s and they were not so "fashion" orientated and knew what they were selling inside out!

There is still a traditional 'army store' in York in a side street in the city centre and it has all kinds of the stuff that a good army store should have.

Prior to the Famous Army Stores, were the Army and Navy Stores.

Paddy, my first big pack was a Campari - the pocket straps snapped on the first day and the external frame was bent within a week! My second pack was a Brown-Best model. In those days hipbelts were optional extras. The BB one was inflatable. You can guess what happened.

My first tent was a Trio Vassfar, a single skin model with, um, "condensation problems".

    Karrimor!
I regularly use a pack that was bought 27yrs ago and it's remarkably lightweight - and durable. I am now thinking I will weigh it and post the result.
Is my 27yr old rucsac lighter than your 27 yr old rucsec? I often wonder if some of the older kit is no heavier than the new.
