I recall some time back seeing an article on trig point spotting. I can't remember it's correct name, or the website where you log your finds. Anyone know?

This will probably help. Try the links at the bottom. I'm afraid to say 'trigpointing' sounds a bit anorak-ish to me (sorry)! Though I did used to climb up every one I could when I was a kid...

Just use 'em as a handy reference point really i.e "Oh good, now I'm at the summit of..."

Did I read the same article, wanting people to 'adopt' them, as the OS no longer needs them for accurate surveying?

Probably makes more sense to adopt a chimp or a llama or something...

Except that many trig points are not at the summit of anything.
The only thing I've ever adopted is an attitude of some kind or another.

    ....and here's a few more
    http://www.jeremyp.net/trigpoint/index.php
    http://www.deformedweb.co.uk/trigs/search.cgi

.......and even a history of triangulation mapping
    http://www.deformedweb.co.uk/trigs/t...e.cgi?t=l,%20t

Adoption took place in the 90s (Mine was 1994 - Hill Fort in the Wareham Forest, Dorset)
No idea if the schemes still going, but I expect there's quite a few in the less popular spots just waiting for a foster parent
    ;-)

As far as I could tell, the trig points on both Helvellyn and Scafell Pike are not on the actual summits.

What is the logic of this?

"Kate- no otherside of B'mth - why?"

cos I grew up in Dorchester. But if you're the 'wrong' side of Bournemouth it's another matter ;-)

I went "trig" spotting a while ago, but I am not very good at it, so I have to enlist the help of the dogs to find them.

Now where's that Trig point ????
