ell we've got a thread to slag off Trail on, so let's have one to praise Outside!

First thing to explain is that while Outside is American, it doesn't matter. The two big feature articles this month - profiles of Angola and a nutter Norwegian polar explorer - aren't affected by the origins of the authors. It's typical for the big features to be international and non-US. The same goes for the news which often covers international expeditions or events, or the 'Bodyworks' fitness advice.

Granted the gear articles are sometimes US-specific, and so are of course the US 'Destinations'. But I often find them inspiring nonetheless.

The outstanding feature of Outside is the writing, photography and design - it's better than anything you can find in print in the UK. I just don't think we have the heritage of photo-journalism and news magazine feature writing the US has, and we're the poorer for it.

So it's ok to slag something off continually, but not to praise something else?

Though it would be nice to see lots of people getting together to sing the praises of something, rather lots of people getting together to have a go at sommat.

C'mon guys - far too many negatives.

Trop, trop, trop de la negative vibes.

D'you wanna reinforce the world view of "Come to the UK in a big flash car & someone will scratch it for you"

UK the land where venturers are bitched?

C'mon was it Mary Poppins that said we had to accentuate the positive?

I say potato, you say potato...
    Potato, potato, etc
Let's call the whole thing off?

Was that the word you meant?

Or maybe another word with the same first and last letters? I've trekked through paramo and rubbed shoulders with the fraillejones btw, so the name has a special resonance for me. Not sure I'd want to live in BogotŠ though. Did you know that there's a Wimpy burger bar in Bogota with large framed photos of London on the wall? They give us highly breathable clothing manufacture, and what do we give them? Cheap burgers, that's what.

Dan, (sorry in delay, still no internet at home) I was KIDDING!!! Shock, horror.

Except that I really WILL try and buy a copy today (and if I can't find a copy somewhere around Holborn way, then I wont be able to find one anywhere!), then let you know what I reckon.

Not sure the other thread as started to slag Trail off all the time though. Its just that a lot of us seem to not like the current direction the mag has taken.

Having said that, there IS praise for the article that people find interesting.

I love it - 'the' article, the one and only, in the £3.00 whole mag...

But there are THREE articles in Trail this month...that's a quid a throw and not bad value at that!

The articles that are in it aren't bad...in fact I think a couple of them are very good...

Sorry, meant to type "articles", honest.

Can you have a "freudian" slip when you're typing?

Dan, didn't get a chance to buy a copy Friday, they expected me to do some work! And I fainted with shock. So will try again today.

OK Simon. A1 for effort. Keep it up now!

(Horrors, that Snowy article in Trail sounds quite interesting, so I *might* buy one if I go anywhere near somewhere that flogs it)

Your secret is safe with me.

And ten of my best friends.

I'm gonna borrow a mates copy. I'm a pauper now, so I have an excuse for being tight!
