I am currently writing up the description for a Scafell Pike trek for my website and was wondering why the trig point is made of stone unlike most others that are of course concrete?

Is this the original trig point or was there a precious one?

Anyone know the story behind the big stone circular cairn aswell?

The big stone cairn is known as the band stand and was built as a war memorial, and indeed is used two or three times a year for a band to play on.

The Trig point was originaly concrete but was rebuilt, I will find the date for you and post back

Not all trig points are white-painted concrete blocks. There are quite a few knocking around the hills which are built in the 'rustic stone' style.

Thanks for the info WW. Most cairns I see are those nasty looking white things so just presumed when the OS originally did the surveying that they were standard. I need to steer away from the obvious routes maybe to find the stone ones?

It'll be a white trig point today.

    It's snowing again!

The trig point on Black Fell/Crag (near Tarn Hows) is made of stones (with a bit of cement added to keep 'em together).

A trig point on Festival Park in the middle of Stoke on Trent is stone clad. It was also the very last trig point to be built, in 1986.

Really that late? I watched a Map Man episode on the Triangulation last week that was really interesting, anyone know when the OS surveying using the Trigs was completed?

Definately 1986, I helped "commission" it, though it wasn't strictly required for triangulation purposes. Some years later it occurred to me to ask the OS and they confirmed that this was the last one. Didn't realise at the time that I was party to a momentous but quirky piece of British history!

Anyone seen this bizarre site that actually lists all the trig points! I'm moving to Gee Cross next week near Hyde as I wanna be closer to the hills than the city and I have for the first time ever got a Trig Point just behind me! Wahey!
